The Beautiful Mind Charity (BMC) is a philanthropic organization that pursues cultural diplomacy and aims to give and share love with the less privileged around the world through diverse cultural activities.
It was founded by a group of Korean musicians in 2000. It started in Singapore as the fourth chapter of its global reach and obtained its charity organization status in 2012 followed by Institution of a Public Character (IPC) status in 2016.
The BMC education unit, the Beautiful Mind Music Academy, offers a free music education program to children with special needs and the underprivileged in the local community.
Currently, 19 local students are enrolled in the program and receive lessons from 16 professional musicians from 6 countries.
I now feel sorry for those who look strangely at them, rather than for those with the disabilities.
When I was sitting amongst the audience watching my first Beautiful Mind Charity concert in 2014, I never could have imagined that years later I would end up directing this movie.
It was my first classical concert and it struck a chord. The very next year, I jumped on-board and started my BMC journey, documenting the performers and the concert.
As the years went by, pieces of the children’s stories piled up on my external hard drive.
I am now connecting these clips together for I feel the need to know them more - through a deeper story.
As we weave through the story, I concentrate on the small changes I have noticed through my own perspective.
Ever so often we hear those who overcome trials and obstacles say, “We saw the light of life” or “We found new hope”.
I was curious to know: what made them the person they are now? What kind of emotions have they experienced?
I was able to see a range of differing emotions between the parents who care for children and the people who teach them music.
One of the things that I realized in life is that we are sometimes faced with complexity and challenges that are often beyond our control.
With that in mind, one perspective may be to see these challenges as a knot, representing an unresolved issue or an obstacle.
A way of dealing with these obstacles is through the process of recognizing the issue mentally and accepting it in your heart. Given time, what seemed like forced behavior will later turn into a habit.
Meanwhile, another perspective can see a knot as a representation of a bond, a connection and even strength. Both perspectives will be explored in my movie.
Through this experience, the biggest takeaway from a personal point of view is that my attitude and viewpoint towards my initial sympathy for the children has changed.
I now feel sorry for those who look strangely at them, rather than for those with the disabilities.
I hope this film will help the public and the viewing audience understand this new perspective, leading to positive outcomes through small but significant changes in how we all view people with disabilities.
Ultimately, these individuals can teach us how adversity can be overcome through love, passion and determination.
